Outrage over the brutal stabbing of
transwoman Rita Hester in her
Boston-area apartment on November
28, 1998, sparked a movement to
remember the victims of
anti-transgender violence.
This year marks the eleventh annual
Transgender Day of Remembrance,
which will take place next Friday,
November 20, 2009.
Events are scheduled around the globe, including three here
in San Francisco. Below you

And while this year we do have
something to celebrate in the effort
to prevent violence against LGBT
people with the recent signing of federal LGBT
hate crimes legislation, titled the
Matthew Shepard
and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes
Prevention Act, it is
nonetheless critical for our
communities to continue to
remember the victims of this
violence and to continue to organize
and strategize around ways to
prevent -- not just punish -- anti-LGBT
violence. The hate crimes
legislation
marks an important step forward in
protecting LGBT people against
hate-based violence and also
represents the first piece of
federal legislation to include
protections for transgender persons.
