María
Fernanda Blázquez Gil was born in Mexico City in
July 21, 1973 amongst a family of musicians.
Ever since she was little girl she
showed great interest in music, specially singing.
She debuted in the show business at the age of 10 in
a TV contest where she got the opportunity to sing a
duet with Luis Miguel.
She never stopped feeling passionate
about music and in 1994 she finally got to sign her
first record deal with Sony Music and decided to go
by the name of Fey.
The following year she released her
first album entitled Fey, the first single off the
record, Media Naranja, quickly became a radio
hit and reached the top chat spot in Mexico. The
second single, Gatos en el Balcón, managed to
be one of the best videos of the year according to
the lists of the genre’s experts. Another successful
single off this record is
La noche se mueve.
Besides having a successful career,
Fey was a trend setter from the get go due to the
launch of her own clothing line (Fey Jeans) and
being the image for Cover Girl in Mexico.
Her sophomore album released in 1996,
called Tierna La Noche, helped her achieve the
coveted crossover. Azúcar Amargo, another single off
this record, also reached the top spots on the radio
charts in Mexico and the first spots in Brasil, the
United States (Latin Market), South America and
Spain. Billboard Latino considered Tierna La
Noche as the best pop album of that year. The
album had versions in English and Portuguese, and
later otwo more singles off that album became hits:
Subidón and Te pertenezco.
Due to her new found success Fey
became able to tour the world giving 130 concerts
reaching the goal of any artist, filling the
legendary Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City ten
times in a row making her the first woman to have
ever made such achievement. Her album went platinum
10 times worldwide.
In the midst of the beginning of her
career in 1998, Fey was chosen to represent Mexico
and record a track which was included in the
official album of the World Cup in France, ’98.
In October, 1998 her third album is
released: El Color de los Sueños, the first single
was Ni Tú Ni Nadie. Díselo con flores,
Cielo líquido and Canela are also singles off
this album. Soon a promotional tour would be
planned that lasted a year, afterwards Fey would
take a break. In 2000 her first Greatest Hits album
was released called simply Hits, which
included 5 classic songs from each of her previous
albums.
In 2002, Fey changes her whole crew
in order to release something completely different:
Vértigo. The first single to make it into the
radio charts was Sé lo que vendrá, single
whose video was directed by Gustavo Garzón. Vértigo
was a double album since it was recorded both in
English and Spanish.
In 2004 Fey signs a record deal with
EMI Music, until that moment (in Sony Music) Fey had
sold about 6 million records in Latin America and
the US. She also won several awards, national and
international, including the Billboard Award for
Best Female Artist. Her new album managed to stay in
the Billboard chart among the best selling records
in the US for over 50 weeks.
In 2005 the album La Fuerza del
Destino is released, a tribute to the Spanish
band Mecano. This album would make her a Grammy
nominee as Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Female
and mark her return to the Festival of Viña del Mar.
The following year, the Mexican
performer came back to the music scene with her
album Faltan Lunas, produced by the Apaniard
Carlos Jean. The first single off this record was
Aquí Estoy.
In 2008 Fey has come out and produced
her most ambitious album yet, Dulce Tentación
(Sweet Temptation) and has decided to distribute it
independently with Mi Rey Records (part of Grupo
Mantequilla). The album was produced by Sam “Fish”
Fisher, who has worked with artists like Duran Duran
and Marilyn Manson.
The album was released in Mexico
physically and Worldwide Digitally, the last week of
April and her debut single from the album,
Lentamente, has been a top ten her native
country since it’s release in February.
Dulce Tentación
has already sold more than 40
thousand copies in Mexico, making it a certified
gold album in less than six weeks. The album debuted
top 5 in the Itunes Latino chart, and has remained
amongst the top 20 sold album of the Latino category
for over 8 weeks.
