Viewing the Parade
The general public watches the parade from the sidewalks lining both sides of Market Street, from Beale to Eighth.   Mind you, this is a first-come, first served affair.
photo: space age parade contingentIf you want a good viewing place, arrive early, and expect there to be a crowd of people 10, 15 deep separating the public from the parade as the countdown to parade start time approaches. Many people in front of you will be taller than you, if you're of the height-challenged variety. Some veterans arrive early in the morning and cordon off areas, and set up lounge chairs and ice chests full of drink and food.  Other lucky few manage to have friends with a balcony view, or work at a building along Market St that affords them an above the parade view.

Place & Time
The parade starts at Market and Beale on Sunday June 27th, 2004 at 10:30AM and proceeds west on Market Street to Market and Eighth Street.

Theme

2004 Pride Celebration Theme:
Out 4 Justice

"Out 4 Justice" is the theme for the 34th anniversary San Francisco Pride Parade and Celebration. Chosen at the Annual General Meeting from 35 proposals from our community, "Out 4 Justice" keeps the political and legal struggles of our civil rights movement at the forefront of our attention throughout the year.  Pride President Joey Cain said: "Our membership voted overwhelmingly in favor of this theme because it speaks to many different communities. “Out 4 Justice” places our fight for queer equality in the larger picture of the movement for social and economic justice that is the wellspring of all human rights movements. It reminds us that our beautiful LGBT movement is about creating a just world for all."

Just as San Francisco Pride partnered with Equality California to call attention to AB205 during last year's event, next year's parade and celebration will incorporate education, outreach and action on the issues facing our community.
Pride Executive Director Teddy Witherington said:
"San Francisco Pride is both a celebration and a statement--it’s a symbol of our strength and diversity that reaches across the globe. When we come out as a community for Pride, just as when we come out individually, we affirm our humanity, demanding full equality and justice.”
This is the 34th anniversary of the San Francisco Pride Celebration and the Parade. The event is to be held over the June 26/27 weekend.

Parade Grand Marshals 2004

The public polling for Grand Marshals have been finalized and the results are in. We congratulate the winners in these categories:

Celebrity Grand Marshals
Alan Cumming

Though Alan Cumming might be more popularly known as the Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United and in the recurring role as Fegan Floop in the Spy Kids trilogy, he’s also a masterful Shakespearean, familiar with the smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd. In 2001, he paired up with Jennifer Jason Leigh to co-write, co-direct, and co-star in The Anniversary Party. Mr. Cumming boasts a long list of acting and writing credits ranging from cameo appearances on popular television shows (Frasier, Sex and the City, Third Rock From the Sun) to Tony-Award winning Broadway starring roles (Cabaret), as well as taking home an Olivier award for his London performance in Accidental Death of an Anarchist. He is currently developing his first novel, “Tommy’s Tale”, into feature-length film. Aside from the above, Mr. Cumming has also cruised the catwalk for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger and Cynthia Rowley.

Bruce Vilanch

Bruce Vilanch is one of the most sought-after comedy writers working today, having written for the most popular entertainers in the world and virtually every awards show. Recently seen gracing the cover of his book, Bruce! I believe as artists our job is to be visionary as well as to bring the realities to light. My photographs are intricately simple visuals of the world we live in focusing on the beauty of the natural and manmade." Founder of LVA : Lesbians in the Visual Arts (1990), Hyder's activism revolves around the arts and civil/social justice. She is the final speaker at this year's Dyke March "Uprooting Racism" rally in Dolores Park. She holds an open studio the 2nd weekend of each month at 386 Noe - except this July when she is exhibiting her work at Uma Gallery in New York City.
Gavin Newsom
The Honorable Gavin Newsom
42nd Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco
Gavin Newsom was elected the 42nd Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco on December 9, 2003. He was sworn into office on January 8, 2004 by his father, the Honorable William Newsom.  Mayor Gavin Newsom has made bold ideas the driving force of his administration. As Mayor, Gavin Newsom uses ideas, innovation and practical solutions to improve the quality of life for all San Franciscans. His administration draws upon San Francisco's greatest asset-the diversity and the talents of its people-to meet any challenges that face the City.
Mayor Newsom is a fourth generation San Franciscan who has dedicated his political career to improving the City. He was elected three times to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and served on the Board from 1997 until 2004.  As a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Newsom focused on the core issues that make a difference for all San Franciscans. He worked with residents from every corner of the city to restore our neighborhood parks. Newsom sponsored legislation implementing Rescue Muni's reform plan and helped put our Municipal Railway on the road to recovery. As a member of the Board of Supervisors, Gavin Newsom was willing to confront San Francisco's greatest challenge, homelessness and he emerged with the most comprehensive reform of homeless policy in a generation.
Before embarking on his career in public service, Mayor Newsom was a successful small businessman. In 1992, he opened his first local business, the PlumpJack Wine Shop. Over the years, he expanded this business and has created more than seven hundred jobs for San Franciscans.  Gavin Newsom was born October 10, 1967 to the Honorable William Newsom and Tessa Newsom. He grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from Santa Clara University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Gavin is married to Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, who served as Assistant District Attorney for San Francisco and is a noted legal analyst.
Kate Raphael

Kate Raphael is a cofounder of Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism (QUIT!) and Direct Action to Stop the War, which shut down San Francisco for five days at the beginning of the Second Iraq War.  As a member of LAGAI - Queer Insurrection, the oldest radical queer liberation group in the Bay Area, she helped design the 1999 Crash The Parade campaign against commercializing and walling in the LGBT freedom day Parade.  She is now continuing her fight against (Apartheid) Walls in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, where she has spent most of the last year as a member of International Women’s Peace Service.

Mabel Teng
    Mabel Teng, San Francisco Assessor-Recorder
On February 12, 2004 Mabel Teng played a role in making history by marrying lesbian couple Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. Mabel was “profoundly honored and moved to help lead these momentous efforts to uphold California’s Constitution and grant licenses to over 4,000 same-sex couples” until a court order required the marriages stopped on March 11th.
Mabel’s work in the LGBT community is consistent with a lifetime of public service dedicated to equality and social justice including her leadership in the Rainbow Coalition and passionate advocacy for immigrants’ rights. She was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1994, becoming the first Asian-American woman to serve in the City’s legislative branch. Prior to becoming a supervisor, Mabel was elected to San Francisco’s Community College Board, and served as its President.
For Mabel, San Francisco’s effort to recognize same-sex marriage is the first major civil rights issue for the 21st century, and reminiscent of the struggle to legalize interracial marriage. It took 20 years for the U.S. Supreme Court to legalize interracial marriage after the California Supreme Court had done so. Similarly, Mabel believes, “it will take extraordinary courage and persistence to prevail, but the fundamental constitutional principles of human rights and justice are on our side.”
Mabel has long been a champion of LGBT rights. Nearly 15 years ago, she participated in the founding conference of the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance, became a proud member of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, and participated in a major educational campaign promoting understanding and acceptance of LGBT people in Asian and Pacific Islander communities. As a San Francisco Supervisor, Mabel sponsored legislation changing the name of Myrtle Steet to Alice B. Toklas Place, and co-sponsored the “Equal Benefits Ordinance” designed to end discrimination in employee benefits for domestic partners.
As San Francisco’s independently elected Assessor-Recorder since January 2003, Mabel leads the agency responsible for maintaining the integrity of marriage licenses and other official records, and for the valuation of all commercial and residential properties.

Attorney General
John Ashcroft

General John Ashcroft consistently and intentionally has argued against civil liberties for LGBT persons for the entirety of his political career - beginning with his two-term stint as Missouri's Attorney General, through 8 years as that state's governor and as its US Senator for 6. As the US Attorney General he refused to honor the Pride Celebration at the US Department of Justice, over which he presides, and he has overseen the implementation of the PATRIOT Act - designed to systematically strip civil liberties from all Americans. While in the Senate, he voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and during the debate went so far as to say that schools should be able to discriminate against LGBT people in their hiring practices.

Sundance Country Western Stage
Whether it's two-step, line-dance, waltz, or swing, country-western dancing is popular in the queer community all around the U.S. (and Canada, Europe and Australia too). Today's country dancing is fun, romantic, wild, sexy, and free-spirited. And, best of all, it's easy to learn. The Sundance Saloon Country-Western Dance Corral will be open from noon until 6 p.m., with a beginning line dance lesson and a beginning two-step lesson during the day. Boots and hats are not required – all you need is the desire to have fun! In addition to lessons at the Pride dance floor, several venues offer dance lessons and dancing in the Bay Area. For a complete listing of dance venues and classes, visit the Sundance Association web site at http://sundancesaloon.org.This year’s country-western dance floor is again produced by the Sundance Association for Country-Western Dancing, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization which promotes country-western dancing in the gay/lesbian community in the Bay Area.

Contingent Monitors and Safety
SF PRIDE 2004

Please Note - The first hour of each Safety Monitor Training also double as Contingent Monitor Training

Training Workshops
The following dates reflect the remaining Safety Trainings, which will begin with a Contingent Monitor training session druing the very first hour.

June 23, Wed. 7:00 p.m. - First Congregational Church of SF, Urban Life
Center, 1101 O'Farrell at Franklin, SF
June 25, Fri. 7:00 p.m. - Bethany United Methodist Church, 1268 Sanchez St.
June 26, Sat. 2:00 p.m. - The LGBT Center, 1800 Market Street, SF

All sites are wheelchair accessible.  All training workshops begin with a one hour Contingent Monitor Orientation and are followed by an hour and a half devoted to Safety Monitor Training.
Try NOT to come to the last training session, as it is somewhat reserved for out-of-towners, likely to be standing-room only, and overwhelmingly hot! If you get turned away from this training, due to capacity limits, then your group will forfeit their participation in the Parade.

Safety needs you! Come volunteer as a Safety Monitor for the SF Pride Celebration and Parade!  Perks include:
-up to two t-shirts (different colors for Saturday and Sunday)
        -meals & water
        -usually a special goodie bag
        -support staff
-a private rest area and porta-potties
        -training in non-violent crowd control
-a special volunteer picnic after the event
-the opportunity to make friends and collect up to half a million phone numbers.  This year Safety Monitors will also be able to participate in the Community Partners share.

What will you be doing as a Safety Volunteer?
-helping people enjoy SF Pride safely by assisting in the facilitation of the
          Parade and Celebration!
-Be an extra set of eyes and ears
-help to move large objects/vehicles through crowds
-remind people what common sense responses should be
-assist Medical and Accessibility Committees where appropriate
-be pro-active rather than re-active for situations

Requirements
An enthusiastic team player committed to attending one training session! Returning volunteers have an option of attending every other year. Safety CANNOT use any volunteers who have not been through the training. We appreciate people with experience in crowd control (including Parents, Librarians, Teachers & Bartenders) and those speaking more than one language or sign language, but we are just as excited to train persons who do not posses this experience. You are required to remain clean and sober while you are on duty.

How many volunteers are needed?
    Saturday 100-120 Volunteers
    Sunday 180 Volunteers.

Who will I report to?
Safety Sub-Committee Co-Chairs, Safety Joan and Safety Dave.  Report to Safety Command Tent at Parade Command Center.

What is the time commitment and/or shifts requirement?
We usually work with anyone who wants to work with us. Minimum 4 hours on either or both event dates, but shifts usually run approximately 8 hours (or more, depending on the volunteer).

photoSF Pride strives to make the Parade and Celebration accessible to all.  If you have accessibility needs that are not mentioned here, please email us with your concerns.

There will be a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Gathering Space at the Pride celebration, so that out of state visitors who are Deaf and hard of hearing can visit this gathering space and learn more. This space will open Sunday, June 27, 10am - 7pm.
Requests for tactile interpreters for Deaf-Blind individuals need to be submitted to the Deaf Gay & Lesbian Center (DGLC) one month in advance. For any requests submitted after June 1, 2004, DGLC will make every effort to secure the services of tactile interpreters, but they cannot be guaranteed.

Party Safe

The San Francisco Pride Celebration is proud to be a DanceSafe certified safe settings event.  Some of the special harm reduction features of this year’s Celebration include:
-A harm reduction booth, sponsored by DanceSafe and other organizations, that will provide literature and information on everything from drugs to safer sex and hearing protection. DanceSafe volunteers will also provide free ecstasy adulterant screening.
-A harm reduction contingent in the parade. If you or your organization would like to march in the contingent please contact Will Roscoe for more information.
-Free drinking water and safety messages at the dance areas.

dance safe logo    DanceSafe is a nonprofit organization with chapters throughout the country that provide volunteer harm reduction services in the dance music community. As DanceSafe defines it, “Harm reduction is a philosophy and set of strategies that support individuals in improving their health and lives by reducing the harm that can result from their behaviors and circumstances.
Harm reduction was born in the l/g/b/t community in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Faced with a disease without a cure, programs like safer sex education and needle exchange have saved countless lives by educating people on how to reduce the risk of transmission. Today the principles of harm reduction are being adopted by social service and health programs around the world.
One of the most promising applications of harm reduction concepts is in the area of drug and substance use. Given the failure of the war on drugs to prevent drug use, DanceSafe has sought ways of reducing its harm by providing factual information and safety services, such as ecstasy adulterant screening.
In order to encourage safer and healthier partying in general, DanceSafe has developed a set of “safe setting” guidelines for producers and managers of dance music events. These include:

  • Free drinking water at dance areas
  • Availability of free literature on safer sex, drugs, and safety
  • Posting of health and safety information
  • Access for harm reduction and educational organizations.
  • On-site emergency medical services by qualified personnel
  • Adequate ventilation, security, and accommodations at indoor entertainment events

The Outreach Project
In San Francisco, the Queer Club/Circuit Party Outreach Project, sponsored by DanceSafe and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, distributes literature, ear plugs, and condoms at clubs and parties, staffs information tables, and works with club owners and managers to develop health and safety messages for their patrons.  Working with the Outreach Project, the San Francisco Pride Celebration Committee has developed a set of safe settings guidelines for the 2004 event.
