Pride receives the Silver Cable Car Award

The Silver Cable Car has been awarded annually since 1965 to an individual or organization making a significant contribution to San Francisco’s visitor industry. The award is presented at the Bureau’s Annual Luncheon Meeting, which is attended by over 1,000 industry leaders, members, city officials and media. This year, SF LGBT Pride will have the honor of accepting this award from the San Francisco Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, joining past recipients that include Herb Caen, The San Francisco Giants, Dianne Feinstein, Willie Mays, and Beach Blanket Babylon.

Volunteers: The Life Blood of San Francisco Pride
“The highest reward for a person's work is not what they get for it, but what they become because of it.” - John Ruskin

It is not by sheer pride alone that the SF Pride Celebration is able to happen each year. Indeed, there are many elements to Pride that must work in concert to produce California’s largest civic event of the year, and it is Pride volunteers who constitute the very lifeblood of Pride weekend. An event the size of Pride could only be possible by the extremely generous donation of time that each volunteer makes. Our volunteers do everything from supporting our main stage talent behind the scenes to ensuring that the Parade contingents stay on schedule—and to think: not a single voluminous drag queen hairdo to obstruct the view! The generosity and dedication of SF Pride’s volunteers are truly what make Pride a community event. Of course, the generosity of our volunteers has its karmic compensation: a special Volunteer Party after Pride, not to mention the chance to meet and work with like-minded souls who are community-conscious and socially committed.

This year’s Volunteer Coordinator, Brendan Behan, has the tremendous opportunity of getting to work with the very people who will make SF Pride 2006 happen. In the next few weeks, he will be preparing a list of volunteer opportunities for those of you interested in working with Pride in a volunteer capacity. Many may not know that there are numerous ways in which an individual may give hir/her/his time to Pride, including assistance in our office before the June event. Whatever your interest, we have something for you!

If you already know that you want to donate a small portion of your time to making San Francisco Pride the home of LGBTIQ people for the weekend of June 24 and 25, a phone call or an email is always welcome! The volunteer coordinator can be reached by email at brendanb@sfpride.org, or by phone at (415) 864-0831.
