Early Start For Pride 2001

Pride 2001 is starting early! The Pride office has been deluged with calls from people eager to participate in the event.

"It’s exciting to see the early interest from everyone. Pride is committed to more grass roots community participation. We want to continue the success we had last year with community partnerships and look forward to setting new standards in giving back to the community this year." Said Pride President, Cecilia Chung.

Many of the calls have been from organizations keen to participate in Pride’s Community Partner Program. The Pride Committee shares its beverage and gate donation revenues with other non-profit groups. Last year around 30 organizations shared just over $70,000, a record. This year the target is $90,000. The amount which Pride gives back to the community has been increasing steadily over the past four years from $32,170 in 1997 to $78,181 in 2000.

Pride Executive Director, Teddy Witherington, said : "It is very encouraging to see the strategy of community reinvestment gathering momentum. In 1999 we abolished Parade Contingent fees for non-profit whose budgets were under $50k. This year that threshold was increased to $100,000. In 1999 our beverage partners received 25% of the beverage income. This year it is 35%. By partnering with community groups in this way we anchor the event firmly in the community."

Interested organizations should contact the Pride office at info@sfpride.org for details of the Program and an application form. Organizations must be able to commit a minimum of 10 volunteers. The deadline for the receipt of completed applications is March 16, 2001. Parade and Exhibitor fees were frozen this year and the applications were mailed out earlier this month. The deadline for free entry for small non-profits is April 2. A 10% discount applies to all exhibitor bookings received before March 1. The applications are also available on line at www.sfpride.org. Also on-line is a form for nominating individuals and organizations for this year’s Grand Marshal. The deadline for the receipt of nominations is January 31.

The Pride Committee is also proud to unveil the logo for 2001 which sports this year’s theme Queerific. The logo was chosen after a public competition. The winner is local designer, Jason Fain.
