Be Yourself, Change The World
SF Pride Goes In Bold New Direction With Choice Of 2002 Theme
The general members of SF Pride have chosen "Be Yourself, Change The World" as the theme for the 2002 event.
Pride President, Cecilia Chung, said:
"There is no dispute that our community is changing the world, that is why we exist in the first place."
The theme expresses the core purpose of the event. The first part, Be Yourself, goes to the heart of what it means to have pride and the freedom that comes with living your life honestly. It can be interpreted as a challenge, and also as a strong encouragement - don't accept limits or labels from anyone, including yourself. The second part, Change The World, is a statement and a challenge to us all to use our talents, passion, skills and vision to make the World a better place. It is also an acknowledgment of the tremendous impact which San Francisco has on LGBT rights worldwide. The Equal Benefits Ordinance, election of an openly queer president of the Board of Supervisors, the groundbreaking law suit in the Diane Whipple tragedy and the adoption of Transgender Health Benefits are all recent examples of how San Francisco sets a standard on a global level.
Commenting, Pride Vice-President Calvin Gipson said:
"Anyone can throw a party, we're changing the world."
The theme is also a proclamation of Pride and of coming out. By living true, we change our world and the world at large.
Pride Executive Director, Teddy Witherington, said:
"I think the simplicity of the language and the message allows this theme to be interpreted on many different levels by the diverse communities we serve."
The theme was chosen following a series of ballots at the Members Meeting held on 10.16.01. Seventeen suggestions made it onto the ballot and the winning theme emerged after the 3rd round of voting. The International Pride theme for 2002 is "Pride Worldwide". San Francisco is the venue for the annual InterPride Conference in October 2002 when approximately 300 delegates representing Pride organizations from 5 continents are expected to gather and continue in their mission to change the World
SF LGBT Pride 2002 takes place over the weekend of June 29 and 30, 2002.
